I am always excited about getting a new book in the Penguin Classics series by Good Wives and Warriors. First there was Escape to Wonderland, then Escape to Christmas Past, and now Escape to Shakespeare's World! See how cute they look on the shelf together?

This book is of course all about Shakespeare's works, so if you're a fan you'll absolutely love it! Each illustration is accompanied by the Shakespeare quote it portrays, from the following plays: Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Comedy of Errors, Macbeth, Anthony and Cleopatra, Richard III, Julius Caesar, King Lear, Twelfth Night and Cymbeline!

The artwork is everything you've come to expect from GWAW; a page crammed full of literary references, sometimes surreal, always beautiful. The illustrations are very whimsical and dream-like, a perfect match for Shakespeare's tales.
The paper quality is exactly the same as the previous books- a ye olde looking cream stock that takes pencils really well. Beware using markers though; they will shadow the other side if you use particularly heavy pressure, and these are double sided books. A careful hand should be fine!

There are lots of small spaces and detail in this book, so make sure you're comfortable with sitting down and spending a few hours on each picture! There is a mixture of double page spreads and single page images, I just wish it was a bit easier to get into the spine on the two-page illustrations.

Last year I caught word that GWAW's next book would be titled Escape to Oz, all about Dorothy and her trip down the Yellow Brick Road, but Escape to Shakespeare's World became the new release. Could this mean that the Cowardly Lion and Tin Man are coming next? I hope so! I can't wait to have a full shelf of these books, I sincerely hope the girls and their publisher continue with this series for many more to come.

Here's my finished page, coloured with Marco Raffine pencils.
