Escape to Wonderland, the Alice in Wonderland-inspired debut book by GWAW, was met with excellent reviews across the board on its release last month. Escape to Christmas Past is the sequel I've been anticipating for a while now and I have to say I love it more than the first! With the same petit square size, gold leafing embellishments and brightly coloured fold-out cover, the books complement each other and look great together on the shelf. As the following books will also be based on Penguin classic stories, I can't wait to have the set in my bookcase alongside the original tales.
So, onto the new book. This one is based on the Dickens tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, cold-hearted money lender at the heart of A Christmas Carol. This book follows the same format as its predecessor with quotes from the novella scattered throughout rather than a flowing story. The pictures do most of the talking, from humbug-bodied insects to a ghostly being made entirely of locks and chains. There's plenty of Christmas imagery thrown in too; snowflakes, robins and cute cats in stockings! Take a look at the in-depth slideshow below for a taster.
It's very festive and really encapsulates not only the season but the main themes and period of A Christmas Carol. The cream paper is identical to the first book and as I've said before, gives it that vintage feel that is inkeeping with the classic subject matter. It is again double-sided which is its only let down, but I didn't experience any bleed with Triplus markers so it can be forgiven.
The manageable size of the books make them ideal for portability whilst still packing in LOADS of detail, making them a great, affordable stocking filler idea for the colourists you know. GWAW have got me on the edge of my seat AGAIN with the promise of a third book in the series, Escape to Oz! I'm thinking a yellow cover to tie in with the 'brick road', but we won't know until its release in January 2016. I'm sure it will be a brilliant addition to a series that has become a firm favourite of mine. Here's my finished picture of Scrooge's fireplace, coloured with Staedtler Triplus and some metallig gel accents.
This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review. You can order it on Amazon here:
