This beautiful Polish-language colouring book by illustrator Anita Grabos has seemingly gone under the radar in the colouring groups, in fact I was only made aware of it by a member of my page who had stumbled across it. I'm so happy she did as it's one of the loveliest books I've seen this year.
Wyspy is Polish for 'Island', which is what this book is all about. Between the pages you will find a community of islands and their inhabitants, their houses sprouting up from the deepest waves. The book begins with shots of the archipelago, and as you progress the shots get closer until you find yourself looking at road maps and individual houses, through their windows and into the lives of those within.
The production of the book is as high quality as its illustrations, with a special lay flat binding and thick cardstock. Each page is one sided so you can use any colouring materials you like, and there's even a piece of board at the back of the book to give it strength and a surface to lean on.
It's such a whimsical book, my favourite kind, yet still has lots of intricacy to keep the adult colourist interested. It's one of those books you have to look at more than once, noticing new details every time. There's obviously lots of water, so if you colour with a realistic palette your blues and greens will definitely get a workout! One way around this is to fill the waves in with pastel, as you can create your own multi-tonal water without using all your pens up.
The book is priced at just over £12/$16, which may seem a lot but when you take into consideration the expensive binding and quality of paper it's very reasonable. It is currently only available to buy on Amazon from Germany and, more expensively, Poland, but hopefully a UK publishing house will pick it up soon. I'll be emailing a few of my contacts to see if they're interested as I honestly love this book and think it would be very popular in the English market.
Here is my finished picture, coloured with BiC Conté pens, PanPastels and gel glitter.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. You can find it on Amazon here:
And now for the giveaway! I have not one, not two, but THREE copies of Wyspy to give away to my lovely readers! As I have these books 'in hand' and can't afford overseas postage, this competition is UK ONLY, sorry :( Enter via the Rafflecopter below, ends on 09.04.16. Good luck!
