Bobbie Berendson W. is a classical illustrator from Utah, USA with a lifetime interest in costume, culture and curios. She handmakes a selection of jewellery as well as her pen and ink artwork, all styled with her own twist on the historical steampunk genre and sold under her brand, Metallic Visions. Steampunk, Victoriana and Horror are all things that I love, and Bobbie's illustrations are so authentic and true to the aesthetic that they truly are a delight to look at.
This book focuses on Bobbie's fantasy world of Laurentia, particularly the metropolis of St. Augustine, and its opulently attired inhabitants. There is a largely female population in the book who are each written about on the facing page, the 14 illustrations made all the more real with the interesting life stories Bobbie has created. Have a look through this Victorian utopia in the slideshow below.
The book itself is bound with string and a card cover, very much possessing that handmade feel. The paper is an average thickness meaning most markers will bleed through to the other side. I used Staedtler Triplus pens, and although you can see it on the flip side it is not so heavily soaked that you can't read the story behind. I'm not too fussed about that as it isn't affecting the illustrations themselves, which is what matters most. There is plenty of detail in the drawings, lots of gears, clocks, goggles, belt buckles, and bustle dresses for you to enjoy if you're a fan of the culture. The paper is white- I just have a very temperamental camera!
Check out Rafina in Striped Stockings that I coloured with Triplus and a metal marker.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. You can buy your copy on Bobbie's Etsy page.
