Fibracolor MATI and MATI SUPER pencils are a great budget product for use in adult colouring books. Firstly, the MATI. The core is 3mm with slim and lightweight hexagonal barrels which are paint dipped to match the colour of the lead. They have a space for your child to write their name if they're taking them to school.

These are brilliant for children and have lots of really rich colour, plus they're not too soft so the leads are strong and and don't snap or break easily.

Should you make a mistake or go over the lines, MATI pencils can be erased to leave around 10% of their pigment, which is significantly more than even the most expensive pencils like Prismacolor. They sharpen very well with no breakages and have the density to hold a sharp point. They will only smudge if you wipe your hand over them just after colouring- so make sure you blow any pencil residue off the page and handle carefully.

The MATI SUPER pencils arrived in a handy plastic storage box that can be clipped onto other Fibracolor boxes if you already have any of the various other sets. This is the set of 60, which is 5 sets of 12 different colours, not 60 different colours.

The barrels are thicker than standard, measuring 7.6mm in diameter with a chunky 3.8mm lead. This gives the core strength and allows it to stand up to pressure for children or heavy handed colourists. They feel very robust and strong but at the same time are light in the hand and comfortable to hold due to the ergonomic hexagonal shape. The pencils are colour dipped in the same shade as their lead, and have space for a child to write their name on if they take them to school.

What most surprised me about these pencils is the amount of pigment they lay down with barely any pressure, and just how vivid the colours appear. For budget pencils you'd expect budget quality, but this couldn't be further from the truth. These pencils not only produce bright, smooth colours but their soft leads blend beautifully as well- albeit not as flawlessly as artist grade pencils but these certainly hold their own. As you can see on the rose I coloured, complementary shades blend together well and look really striking on the page.

Again, MATI SUPER pencils can be erased to leave around 10% of their pigment, and they sharpen very well with no breakages. These pencils are marketed towards children but I have found them to be a brilliant choice for adult colouring as the blends are marvelous.
