Josh Carrington, better know as Crimson City Inc., is an illustrator from southeast New Zealand. He works predominantly with ballpoint pen which gives his designs even more of a wow factor as they have been created with such a rudimentary tool. There is very much a futuristic, surreal flavour to his style of art, incorporating alien beings and scenes with steampunk paraphernalia like gas masks and 19th century mechanics. The book has a hand drawn quality and is definitely lowbrow rather than refined art. It's like looking through an artist's sketchbook or portfolio which is awesome as the illustrations are very unique and certainly an acquired taste. The book is Amazon CreateSpace published so the paper is very thin and most markers will bleed through. It is one-sided, so just make sure you pop some scrap paper behind the page and you're good to go. The cover is a flexible, thin card which has a matte soft-touch feel. There are 26 illustrations in the book with line widths varying from bold to medium, and the amount of space and detail in each drawing are varied so there's something for lovers of intricacy and simplicity alike. Here is my finished picture, coloured with Fibracolor Diversi waterbased pens and some Kuretake Zig metallics. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. You can find it on Amazon here:
