Claire's Colouring: Zodiac Dreams Gemini

I thought I'd test out my Spectrum Noir Colourblend Pencils on the Gemini illustration from Zodiac Dreams by Marlon Teunissen! I started off by colouring all the mechanical steampunk-style machinery in yellow/gold tones, erasing a little at the edges with my Tombow Mono Zero Eraser to give a higher contrast and the illusion of shine. The colours I used were Maize, Goldfinch and Daisy.

I then moved onto the background of buildings within the metal circle, and decided to black them all out in silhouette. I chose Atlantic Blue, Royal Blue and Reef Blue to graduate the night sky, and dotted some stars on top with a white gel pen.

Next up I decided to do the wings in two-tone, so I chose Amethyst & Pink Blush for the girl and Shamrock & Green for the boy. For their hair, I used Cinnamon & Cider to layer in some texture, and for the skin I did a base layer of Linen and shaded some areas with Eggshell. Their clothes were done in alternating Verdigris & Antique Rose, one of my favourite colour combos.
For the clouds, I took Seal Grey and coloured a light layer just underneath the lines to create a wispy look. I then completely covered all the lines in white gel pen using a circular motion, to buff the edges and make them look fluffy. I used a very slight bit of Albrecht Durer Magnus Warm Grey to extend the grey colour a little more, and washed over the whole thing with my waterbrush.

For the Zodiac wheel I used Cherry Red and Harbour blue for the outer edges of each section, then filled them in with lighter tones- Carnation and Denim Blue. Finally, for the sky I used Derwent Inktense Tangerine & Sun Yellow which I blended out with my waterbrush. Picture complete!

That's beautiful! I used the Spectrum Noir Colourblend Pencils on a page a few weeks back and did not like them. I found them very soft but you made them totally work!

You did a terrific job on shading the clothing. I find that difficult to do with my "untrained eyes," however I'm hoping continual awareness on my part of these coloring techniques will have my coloring efforts improve as time goes on.
