Blomster Mandala, or Flower Mandala, is a beautiful botanical colouring book by Swedish designer Maria Trolle, published by Pagina Forlag who also published Sommarnatt and Hanna Karlzon's other books. It is exactly the same format as Hanna's books in every way, from the Hardcover to the paper. The obvious difference is the illustrations, which are much more plant and nature based than Karlzon's, due to Maria's keen interest in gardening (check out her gardening blog here).
The delicate illustrations are inspired by Trolle's own garden, and such is her love for the subject matter Blomster Mandala was sketched and complete in just a month! Don't let the speed of creation fool you into thinking the art is rushed and of a lesser quality- each one is stunning and really captures the feeling of being right in the midst of the horticultural world, discovering beautiful new flowers and plants as you turn each page. Not only this, but some graceful woodland creatures are also included among the foliage.
As I touched upon earlier, the paper is exactly the same quality, tone and style as Sommarnatt: very smooth, thick and ivory coloured. The hardback cover is enhanced with gold foil on the text, contrasting against the black colour. In fact, the cover looks to me like a night-time garden, full of secrets and mysteries that its furry inhabitants keep. This is further reinforced by the mixture of backgrounds in the book; most are ivory, but there are some black backgrounds too. I like the mixture, it gives the book an extra bit of character.
Blomster Mandala is certainly a book I'd recommend for people who predominantly love colouring flowers and plants, but I think the sheer beauty of the illustrations will appeal to most colourists.
As far as I know, the book hasn't been picked up by a UK publisher as yet, so you will have to buy this book from Penstore.com and have it shipped to your country from Sweden.
Here is a quick page I coloured with my neon Triplus felt pens.
