Creating colouring books is a brand new venture for award-winning cake decorating and papercraft company Katy Sue Designs, who are famous for their silicone cake moulds and baking products. Alongside Derbyshire-based illustrator Sandra Rushton, they have produced two fantastic colouring books that have been designed specifically with the beginner colourist in mind.
The books contain 10 collections of illustrations which each have one main image. These are printed 4 times in total- twice shaded and twice outlined- so that those who are not confident with shading or want to test out different palettes can do so without compromising the page. This gives you lots of scope to 'try before you commit', which is really helpful for those who often start a piece and wish they'd chosen different colours or mediums! The fact that both shaded and outlined drawings have been included caters to those who prefer one or the other, and are also useful for guiding the colourist on the areas where shading naturally occurs. The repeated main images are only the start of each collection; a further 3 coordinated patterns enable you to practice further. Take a look at these flip-through videos (or slideshows if you can't view video files) and see what you think!
The books are landscape oriented with a spiral binding to lay totally flat, and have thick, cardlike paper. There's only 1 image per sheet, so you're free to use any medium you wish! The illustrations are very artistic and have that rustic, hand drawn character that many colouring books lack, particularly now the trend has ballooned and there are more & more bad quality, 'thrown together' ones all over Amazon. Nautical Adventures & Le Shoe feel almost like 'how-to' books for colourists, although there are no actual instructions present. I think it's because the repeated images are there to help you experiment and get it right.
Here are my finished pictures from the books. I did the ship image with Polychromos and the shoe with pastel Touch Twin markers.
These books were given to me in exchange for an honest review. You can find them on Amazon here:

Ohh Le Shoe arrived today - wow what a lovely book and am so looking forward to getting stuck in - lovely lovely designs - what I really like about this book to one of the others I have is (just 3 books) - they are proper designs - the pages of the other book I have is just repeated patterns on each page so its very much same same - but this, and my other new book - Secret Garden Artists Edition - are proper pictures so when completed you feel you have really accomplished a work of art rather then just a page of colour... Thank you for your review of this book without it I wouldn't have known of its existance - (The 'sister' book is now on my Christmas Wish List)
