Masja van den Berg is back with another book in her My Wonderful World series, book 5! Read my reviews of her previous books by clicking the thumbnail of each below.
Masja's artwork continues in its usual style throughout this book: ornamentals, delicate patterns and animals being the main focus. It's difficult to describe Masja's illustrative style five times over without repeating myself, so please do read my previous reviews to get a more in-depth opinion! There is one big change in this book however and that is to do with the paper and format, which I'll explain more about later.
Where book 4 concentrated on patterns and inspiration of India, the illustrations in book 5 have a definite Asian flavour, from the Dragon on the cover to Koi carp and native Japanese Sakura flowers. There are some wallpaper designs and mandalas, but most of the illustrations are centred standalone pieces. Here is a video flipthrough of the whole book:
The difference in this book as I mentioned earlier is the paper quality. Whilst Masja's books have always featured decent stock, this book has taken it further with beautifully thick, almost cardlike paper. In my opinion it's a little more 'toothier' than the paper in her previous books, so would be well suited to coloured pencils as well as markers.
For the first time, each page is perforated at the spine for easy removal, and the illustrations are all one-sided meaning you can use whatever art mediums you like. The cover is also thicker and made from glossy card rather than matte this time. There is gold foiling and stunningly beautiful exotic colours that really draw you into the book. It is available to buy on Masja's webshop for around £5, a bargain for the quality. My finished page was coloured with Staedtler Triplus felt pens, and I'm working on another with rainbow Deco Foil - see my tutorial for using foil in your colouring books here.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. You can find it here:
